Our Fabric Range
If a fabric is labelled “Contract,” it is not part of the Umbra fabric collection but is approved for commercial projects where budget is a priority. These fabrics are usually cheaper but do not meet the same appearance and performance standards as Umbra collection fabrics.
Fabric-Product Compatibility Matrix
Recommended fabrics have been tested on the system in question and hold to high standards.
Compatible fabrics are usable on the system in question, but aren’t as consistent/high quality as recommended fabrics.
Blank fabrics can’t be used with the system in question.

Fabric Types
All of our fabric falls under one of three categories: Sunscreen, Blackout and Light Filtering
Sunscreen
- Also known as screen fabric these fabrics tend to come in 4 different openness factors: 1%, 3%, 5%, and 10% - check the specific fabric to see the specification.
- The percentage refers to how much of the fabrics surface area is made up of the space between the weave. Therefore meaning that 10% fabrics are the most open, and 1% fabrics are the most dense. Therefore a 10% fabrics lets the most light through and has the most visibility through it.
Light Filtering
- Light filtering fabrics are also commonly broken down into two sub-groups, dimout and sheer fabrics.
- Sheer fabric has a very loose weave, and as a general rule transmits a lot of light. They’re commonly chosen for their aesthetics rather than their functionality.
- Dimout fabrics are fabrics that have a solid weave, and block a lot of heat and light. The only difference between dimout and blackout fabrics is that dimout options can still have a small amount of light ‘bleeding’ through.
Blackout
- Unlike dimout fabrics, the ones under our blackout category maintain full light block. They commonly have a white backing to help reduce solar heat gain, although that isn’t always the case, check the specific fabric to be sure.
Blackout Fabrics best suited to our specialist Blackout Blinds
Contract
- A range of fabrics that are commonly used in large contract projects where fabric price over performance is prioritised.
Widths
Fabric widths are an important consideration when you’re working with wide blinds.
TRA Values
There are two different metrics that TRA values measure.
Solar TRA: Measures the heat that goes through a fabric
Optical TRA: Measures the light that goes through a fabric
TRA is an acronym method that is used to measure solar and optical performance of different fabrics.
T = Transmission: How much heat/light goes through the fabric.
R = Reflection: How much heat/light bounces off the fabric.
A = Absorption: How much heat/light is absorbed by the fabric.
Nearly all light and heat that is absorbed will enter the building, as it then radiates out into the space. If you want to look at how much heat or light will be blocked, it’s best to look at Reflection.
